How to Pack Light: The Ultimate Carry-On Only Guide for Any Trip

The unique job of carry-on-only is not a capsule-wardrobe aesthetic. It is whether the bag you packed still fits the published cabin box and weight cap on the ticket you bought — including wheels and handles — after you add the laptop, the liquids bag, and the jacket you swore you would wear.

This desk does not run a one-bag fleet and does not rank 40L packs with a trophy. The notes below come from carrier baggage pages, TSA liquids, FAA spare-battery rules, and the packing threads travelers actually quote on r/onebag and r/HerOneBag. Airline boxes move. Open the ticketed carrier the morning you zip the bag.

The 14-day laundry math is a different page: how to pack light for a two-week trip. The subtract-by-trip list is the ultimate packing list. First-trip order of operations is travel tips for beginners.

Unique angle: the published box vs a 40L fantasy

Listicles flatten “just take a 40L.” Travelers are choosing among four different products.

Mainline U.S. carry-on. United, American, and Delta publish inch boxes on their own baggage pages. A standard 21–22 inch spinner or a 40L travel pack often fits if the wheels and the bulge from packed cubes still clear the sizer. “Carry-on approved” on a product page is marketing. The carrier PDF is the document.

Low-cost overhead bag you paid for. Ryanair Priority is a 55 × 40 × 20 cm bag, 10 kg, plus the small under-seat item. easyJet’s large cabin bag is 56 × 45 × 25 cm including handles and wheels, 15 kg, and it is an add-on on a lot of fares. A 40L backpack that slides onto a United flight can fail both of those sizers.

Personal-item-only fare. Ryanair’s included bag on a basic fare is 40 × 30 × 20 cm under the seat. easyJet’s free small bag is 45 × 36 × 20 cm. Spirit and Frontier publish their own under-seat boxes. A 40L “one bag” on that ticket is a gate-check fee, not a lifestyle.

Checked bag on purpose. Winter boots, a stroller, a duty-free haul, or a hold-bag fare you already paid. Carry-on-only is then wasted stubbornness.

When to skip carry-on-only: the ticket is personal-item-only and you will not buy the overhead add-on; the published weight cap is 7–10 kg and your empty bag already eats half of it; you are packing a second pair of boots or a week of suits; you are connecting onto a carrier whose sizer you have not opened. Skip is a PDF decision.

Listing check: ticketed carrier’s cabin dimensions including wheels, weight cap, personal-item vs overhead, and whether the fare already includes the bigger bag.

Before you pack

  • Open the baggage page for every operating carrier on the ticket, not the marketing airline.
  • Write the box in centimeters or inches the way that page writes it. Include wheels and handles.
  • Write the weight cap if they publish one. Ryanair Priority is 10 kg. easyJet large cabin is 15 kg. A U.S. mainline page may list no weight. That is not permission to stuff 18 kg.
  • Weigh the empty bag. A 7.5 lb spinner plus a laptop is already a chunk of a 10 kg cap.
  • Decide personal-item-only vs paid overhead before you pull clothes out of the closet.
  • Put liquids that fail TSA 3-1-1 in the “buy there” column, or check a bag.
  • Confirm spare power banks stay in the cabin. FAA PackSafe is carry-on only for spares.

How airline boxes actually differ

The table is a job map from carrier pages this desk checked in 2026. It is not a quote for your Tuesday flight.

JobPublished box this desk usedSkip a 40L if
Ryanair basic farePersonal item 40 × 30 × 20 cm under the seatYou packed a travel pack “because onebag”
Ryanair Priority55 × 40 × 20 cm, 10 kg, plus the small itemThe empty bag plus laptop already blows 10 kg
easyJet standardSmall bag 45 × 36 × 20 cm, 15 kg, under the seatYou assumed the overhead was free
easyJet large cabin (paid / Plus)56 × 45 × 25 cm including wheels, 15 kgThe spinner’s advertised “22 inch” is the body only
U.S. mainlineCarrier inch box on that airline’s baggage pageYou used a blog’s “22 × 14 × 9” as if every carrier agreed

Wheels and side pockets are how people fail a sizer they “measured at home.” Soft sides help. A hard-shell that is 1 cm over on the handle does not.

For which wheeled bag still fits a mainline bin, see best carry-on luggage. For packs vs a spinner, see best travel backpacks and backpacks for air travel.

Weight vs volume

A bag can fit the box and still fail the scale. Low-cost caps are the usual surprise.

Weigh once empty. Weigh again with the laptop, the 1-quart liquids bag, and the shoes you refused to wear on the plane. The second number is the one the gate agent uses.

Shoes are the gram killer. Two pairs is a system. A third pair is a hold bag. Wear the heavier pair.

Cotton jeans plus a hardcover plus a full-size toiletry bottle is how a “light” pack hits 12 kg. The two-week page is the laundry fix. This page is: take the extra pair out or buy the hold add-on before you reach the sizer.

What actually earns a place in the bag

This is not a 200-item dump. That is the packing list. Carry-on-only keeps the items that fail if they are in the hold or if you do not have them at the curb.

On your body or in the personal item: passport, a payment card, the phone, a small battery that stays in the cabin, medications you cannot replace tonight, one change of clothes if the overhead gets gate-checked.

In the overhead bag: the rest of a 5–7 day capsule, a rain layer, the liquids that already fit TSA 3-1-1 (3.4 oz / 100 ml containers, one quart bag, one bag per person). Medications that need larger volumes are a declare-at-the-checkpoint product, not a “hope they do not notice” product.

Buy at the destination: sunscreen in a sunny city, extra shampoo, a cheap extra tee. A $8 bottle abroad is lighter than a 250 ml you will throw away at security.

Cubes help you see the extra shirt. They do not shrink the airline box. Packing cubes is the comparison; this page is whether you needed the fourth cube.

Liquids, batteries, and the checkpoint

U.S. outbound: TSA’s liquids page is 3.4 ounces (100 ml) per container, one quart-sized bag, one bag. Duty-free over that size has its own tamper-evident-bag rules on inbound connections. Do not treat a European CT-scanner anecdote as a TSA waiver.

Spare lithium batteries and power banks stay in the cabin. FAA PackSafe puts most passenger packs at 100 Wh; 101–160 Wh needs airline approval and a two-spare cap. If the gate agent takes the overhead bag, pull the power bank out. That is the rule, not a forum hack.

A 10,000 mAh bank is usually under 100 Wh. Confirm the printed Wh on the case. “Airport safe” on a listing is not the FAA page.

When to skip carry-on-only

  • The fare is personal-item-only and the add-on costs more than a hold bag you will actually use.
  • Published cap is 10 kg and the empty bag plus laptop already spends most of it.
  • Winter boots, a child seat, instruments, or a week of suits.
  • You are connecting onto Ryanair or easyJet after a loose U.S. domestic bag. The second sizer is the one that bills you.
  • You want full-size liquids and you will not decant. Check the bag or buy there.
  • The trip is a two-week formal work block with no laundry. That is a hold bag, not a failure of willpower.

Skipping carry-on-only is a fare and climate decision. It is not a moral ranking.

Desk checklist at the door

  • Ticketed carrier box written down, wheels included
  • Weight cap written down, or “none published” written down
  • Empty bag weighed
  • Power bank in the bag that stays with you if the overhead is tagged
  • Quart bag actually closes
  • One extra shirt already removed
  • Passport and a card in the personal item, not the bag you might gate-check

Print a categorized list from the packing-list generator after you know the climate. Then subtract. First-hour safety after you land is travel safety tips for first-timers.

FAQ

Can I pack a month in a carry-on?
If the box and the cap fit, and you will wash. The month is a laundry problem. The sizer is this page.

What about cold weather?
Layers beat a second coat. A second pair of boots usually means a hold bag.

Is one bag safer?
You skip the belt. You still watch the bag. It is not a lock.

Business clothes?
One dinner outfit can work. A suit week usually does not.
